APNS awards go to two at Western State

Western State Hospital Nurse Specialist Diane Pavalonis has done it again. For the second time in three years, she’s been honored by the American Psychiatric Nurses Society. Diane, along with RN Cheryl Wasserman received the Best Practices Award for their work on the Recovery Model on the WSH Treatment Mall. (Wasserman is now working at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Fairfax County.) The two are credited with developing creative systems to recruit former patients back into the system to help teach the concepts of recovery. The WSH treatment mall has been nationally recognized for its’ innovative approaches. Diane and Cheryl both get credit for furthering the department’s vision of a “consumer-driven system of services and supports that promote self-determination, empowerment and recovery.”
