Dr. Stephen M. Herrick Named Director at PGH

(Richmond) - Dr. Stephen M. Herrick has been named as the permanent Director of Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville. Dr. Herrick has been serving as Acting Hospital Director since May at the state facility, which is operated by the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services.

“Steve has excellent credentials and a real vision for the future of Piedmont, as well as the care of the elderly throughout the Commonwealth,” said Assistant Commissioner for Facility Management Gerald Deans. “We are very pleased that he has agreed to accept the position and the challenge.”

Dr. Herrick replaces long time Piedmont Director Willard Pierce, who plans to retire later this year.

“It is more important than ever that PGH establish itself as an essential and irreplaceable part of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s mental health system,” said Dr. Herrick. “We are committed to securing our position in the local community and within the state system as geriatric specialists. We will do this by developing new and innovative ways to support the recovery of our elderly consumers both in the hospital and those in the community. Support for the elderly when they are most in need is what we do best.”

Dr. Herrick is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, along with Masters in Health Administration and Counseling Psychology. His undergraduate degree in Psychology is from Virginia Tech. In addition, he is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. Before taking over as Acting Director, Dr. Herrick served as Psychology Manager, Chair of the Clinical Leadership Team, and Forensic Coordinator at Piedmont, having joined the hospital staff in 2002.

Piedmont Geriatric Hospital is Virginia’s only state facility that exclusively treats elderly persons who are in need of inpatient care for mental illness. The 135 bed hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Piedmont employs approximately 400 full and part time employees
