Substance Abuse Exhibit Highlights 2005 National Scout Jamboree
(Bowling Green, VA) As the 2005 National Scout Jamboree begins to wind down,
hundreds of Boy Scouts, their leaders and visitors are taking advantage of one
final opportunity to take in many of the Jamboree exhibits they might not have
seen. Included among them, an innovative anti-drug and substance abuse exhibit
put on by the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and
Substance Abuse Services.
“Drugs: A Deadly Game.” is the theme at this year’s substance abuse display. More than 18 thousand Scouts and visitors are expected to go through the exhibit before the Jamboree wraps up late Tuesday.
The Scouts are getting a hands-on approach to the topic with several
interactive displays available. Scouts and guests can take a computer guided
quiz, testing their knowledge of the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.
“Fatal vision” goggles simulate how vision is distorted under the influence of
drugs or alcohol.
Scouts are also given the chance to leave a message on a giant note board, pledging to stay drug free. It’s called the “Scouting: The anti-drug” and the boys are encouraged to post their favorite healthy living and clean fun activity.
The substance abuse exhibit is located on Thomas Road, directly across from
the top end of the merit badge midway at Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County. The
2005 National Scout Jamboree 10 day run officially ends with troop departure on
Wednesday, August 3rd.
