Cochran, Karnes to Lead State Board
At the January 18, 2006 meeting of the State Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services Board, Victoria Huber Cochran of Blacksburg was elected Chairman. Daniel Karnes of Roanoke was elected Vice-Chairman.
Cochran is currently on a professional leave of absence from her position in the Pulaski Office of the Public Defender to oversee development of jail diversion initiatives and help develop Crisis Intervention Team Projects throughout the Commonwealth.
She replaces outgoing Board Chairman B. Hunt Gunter, who was recognized for his commitment and service to the state board as Chairman during 2005.
Karnes is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who directs the Roanoke Vet Center, assisting former servicemen and women deal with everything from getting benefits to post-traumatic stress disorder.
The State Board is the policy making body of the department, State Facilities and CSBs, and its’ members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the General Assembly. It meets quarterly around the Commonwealth. Its’ next meeting is scheduled for April 7th as part of the annual Volunteer Luncheon in Richmond.
